Integrity from
Vine to Can

At Angela Mia, we are rooted in integrity and sustainability. That’s why our tomatoes bask in the perfect amount of warm California sunshine, grow in the richest soil, and ripen naturally on the vine, not in a truck. It’s the reason we steam-peel our tomatoes, with simple hot water, and compost any excess. Because, for us, tomatoes are a way of life.

Reputable Growers

Our story starts with our growers. Thanks to family farmers like Jason Polder, who followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, and Allen Thomsen, who holds tomatoes close to his heart, we have built a reputation for excellence. The pride our expert second- and third-generation farmers have in their work is reflected in our products.

"Some people call me 'The Tomato Guy,' and for whatever reason, I like tomatoes. I understand them. I’ve been with them for over 40 years."

Meet The Grower: Richard Marchini

What's important to growing a quality tomato?

To grow a quality tomato, it’s all about having good, fertile soil, plenty of water, and just the right climate–which the Central Valley without a doubt has. The tomato plant variety needs to be carefully selected to meet the demands of the canneries to ensure the final product results in the best canned tomatoes and sauces available.

We start the tomato plant from a seed in a hothouse, and after approximately 60 days, the young plant is transplanted to a commercial growing field. Once planted in the soil, the tomato plant is monitored daily for water, fertilizer, insects, and is grown for between 120-130 days prior to harvest.

What does it take to be a farmer?

Farmers hold the responsibility to sustainably provide nourishment for the future generations of Americans. It takes integrity, dedication, hard work, and respect for the land. We have to be many things—an engineer, electrician, botanist, chemist, mechanic, business manager, banker, and, lastly, a farmer.

A farmer cannot plan his day before the day is upon him—the needs of the crop can change in an instant. A farmer is a steward of the land, for without the land there can be no farmer.

"I'm the third generation in my family to farm and our family has been growing tomatoes in the San Joaquin Delta area for over 80 years."
